Live from the Jamboree

Hot, hot, hot here in the Burns pressbox ...

Logged on via the wireless connection in The Star Car real quick. I'll

try to get on and post a blog at the end of every scrimmage.

Due to deadline constraints, I will not likely be able to stick around

for much of the final game between Burns and Hunter Huss. As soon as

we get a call-in from the game, I will post the info. on here.

Also, I'm going to try to do live updates during the season at the

games I attend if there is wireless internet or the Star Car at the

venue. I'll also be posting scores from other games on here as well

when I get calls. So, come on back Friday nights if you can't make it

out to the stadium.

Shelby 21, East Gaston 13

Shelby scored on its first possession on a Marc Williams 70-yard

touchdown scamper as the Golden Lions claimed the opener of the

Cleveland County Jamboree.

Donovan Gidney added a short touchdown run for Shelby in the first

quarter, while Lance Jackson capped the Shelby scoring with a

five-yard dash in the second quarter. Turner Almond was 3-for-3 on

extra points.

East Gaston got a 12-yard strike from Charles Johnson to Justin Clark

and a touchdown reception on the final play of the game by Brent

Rankin for its scoring.

Lexington 21, Kings Mountain 10

Kings Mountain's Michael Roberts connected with Neil Scott on a long

touchdown strike early in the first quarter, but Lexington bounced

back to win 21-10 in the second game.

The Mountaineers' Alex Randall booted a 33-yard field goal midway

through the second quarter before the Yellow Jackets completed the

scoring on a short touchdown run by quarterback Teland Todd.

Lexington's Warren Holmes turned in a 99-yard interception return for

a score in the first quarter, while Cameron Barksdale rumbled in from

short yardage for the first touchdown.

Crest 16, Hickory 14

Crest freshman Trevor Austin drilled a 28-yard field goal with 4:00

left to boost the Chargers past Hickory in the third game.

Crest senior running back Ryan Black posted a pair of short-yardage

touchdowns - the first set up by a long run by quarterback Zac Halbert

and the other set up by a pass from Halbert to Reggie Wikins.

Hickory rushed for one score by Darrien Burch and passed for another

on a long catch-and-run from Kevin Shelton to Austin Johnson. The Red

Tornadoes had a golden chance to take the lead late, but a long pass

was dropped near the endzone by an open receiver before Hickory turned

it over on downs.

Burns 15, Hunter Huss 7

Burns never trailed and handed Hunter Huss a 15-7 setback in the

nightcap of the Cleveland County Jamboree.

Varan Hamrick posted a 10-yard rushing score, while Donta Hopper ran

in from four yards out for the Bulldogs' two touchdowns. Ethan Martin

added a 21-yard field goal for Burns, which led 15-0 before the

Huskies lone score.

If the MLB season ended today ...

Heading into Thursday (Aug. 9)) night's games, here's how the MLB

Divisional Series' would look ...

American League

Boston (East) vs. Seattle (WC)

Cleveland (Central) vs. L.A. Angels (West)

National League

N.Y. Mets (East) vs. San Diego (WC)

Milwaukee (Central) vs. Arizona (West)

Here's how I think they will eventually shake out ...

American League

Boston (East) vs. L.A. Angels (West)

Detroit (Central) vs. N.Y. Yankees (WC)

National League

N.Y. Mets (East) vs. Chicago (Central)

San Diego (West) vs. Atlanta (WC)

A look back at my preseason predictions from April, I've still got a

decent shot at 5 out of 8 (maybe 6 if the Dodgers finish strong). But,

the Rangers? What was I thinking?

AL East - Red Sox

AL Central - Tigers

AL West - Rangers

Wild Card - Yankees

NL East - Braves

NL Central - Cardinals

NL West - Dodgers

Wild Card - Mets

10 key questions heading into college football season

A few days late on posting this ...

Who will land in the BCS Championship game?

Will there be an undefeated team from a smaller conference to throw a

kink in the system once again?

Who wins the coveted Heisman Trophy?

The start of the college football season is a little more than a month

away, but it's never too early to take a glance around the college

landscape.

Here's 10 key questions heading into the 2007 campaign:

1 -- Can Appalachian State repeat as Football Championship Subdivision

(formerly Division I-AA) champs? I don't see why not. They've got one

of the top offensive players, RB Kevin Richardson, and one of the best

defensive players, DB Corey Lynch, in the country -- both named

preseason players of the year in the Southern Conference. The beauty

of the FCS is that no polls or computer systems will decide whether

the Mounties get a chance to repeat -- they settle that on the field.

2 -- What will be the impact of the youth movement at Gardner-Webb?

Head coach Steve Patton has just 11 seniors on the roster, but they do

have their fair share of regulars back -- especially on the defensive

side of the ball. I'm looking forward to seeing Gaffney, S.C. product,

freshman Tyson Petty (WR, 6-0, 165), who should give the Bulldogs a

strong, young threat on the outside.

3 -- Will Wake Forest match its run of a year ago? I don't see the

Demon Deacons back in a BCS bowl, but contending in the Atlantic

Division of the ACC is well within reach. Jim Grobe has this program

built on the foundations of discipline and depth. I can't wait for the

week 1 match up between Wake Forest and Nebraska.

4 -- How will the new coaches fare at UNC and N.C. State? I think both

North Carolina's Butch Davis and N.C. State's Tom O'Brien can get

their respective programs into the top tier of the ACC, but it's not

likely going to happen in their first years at the helm. Like

anywhere, quarterback play will be key as the Heels and Pack will both

have unproven players under center.

5 -- Can Duke win an ACC game? The Blue Devils have 18 starters and 44

lettermen back, so Ted Roof doesn't lack experience this year.

Somewhat-bold prediction ... I think Duke breaks through in league

play and catches Virginia napping in Charlottesville in Week 2 for

what will likely be its only ACC victory.

6 -- Can "The Old Ball Coach" get the Gamecocks in the SEC

championship? With the likes of Florida, Georgia and Tennessee in the

SEC East, it's going to be tough for Steve Spurrier and USC to make

that stride this year. But give Spurrier one or two more solid

recruiting classes and the sky is the limit in Columbia, S.C.

7 -- Best bet to be in the BCS title game in New Orleans? USC vs. West

Virginia. The Trojans are loaded once again out West with Cal being

its biggest hurdle in the Pac 10. The Mountaineers are due to

represent the Big East in the title game. I like the toughness of WVU

to overcome USC's speed in a high-scoring championship.

8 -- Is Tim Tebow ready to be the full-time QB for the Gators? Yes,

and it should be a lot of fun to watch. Look for Tebow, used

occasionally last year, to tuck it under and run a lot for Urban

Meyer's squad.

9 -- Way too early Heisman prediction? RB Darren McFadden of Arkansas.

Look for USC QB John David Booty and Michigan's Michael Hart to also

get a lot of Heisman hype.

10 -- Is there another Boise State out there? Many think TCU can come
